My best friend’s wedding

28 05 2008

And I don’t even have a pic, worse, couldn’t even send a bouquet.

Nine years ago, if I had told you, this guy will fall in Love, fight against the girl’s family and marry someone of his choice, I would die laughing before I finished the sentence. Not that he is not capable of anything miraculous like most motivated human beings, but he just never got into stuff that was close to being called exciting or involved lot of effort, negotiation or communication. But when he did, he was a killer.

I moved but stayed in touch. More with him, than my family. He stayed and finished his (post) graduation, met a girl and fell in love. His family migrated to North America, he delayed his own entry but came, then went back and stayed. Months dragged and to cut a long story short, informed his parents of his decision, one strong willed, unwavering, decision. His amazing parents were extraordinarily supportive and tried to make it the best ‘arranged’ way as possible.

Caste - society won’t change. To cut a long story short, my friend got married where no one from the girl’s family was present. They didn’t even know.

It was after months of speculation, whether he was doing the right thing or not. And that’s the reason I’m proud of him, it’s never easy convincing someone. especially with that attitude of an ‘other’ generation; where society matters more than everything else. Whereas, the fact is that the only society you have to fear is the one in which people think negatively like you do, YOU make the society the way it is, so YOU can fear it, or flaunt it, or use it, to justify something illogical.

I know this, I saw a boy grow into a responsible, ambitious and a mature man, when he thought he found his soul mate. He did all the communication, negotiation and decision making in a few months which he has been trying to escape all his life. It’s his greatest lesson, and with his responsibility, he has proved that he can survive. He has fought, and will fight. All with HER unwavering support, in spite of being torn herself with all the resistance from a family she’s loved and lived with all her life. Each story is different, each conclusion is different.

When it comes to un-arranged marriages and the effort it takes, some shouldn’t fight, some can’t fight, some aren’t worth fighting for, some - well, most are best left unexplained. But the ones that have survived are not just love stories, they are stories of survival and what people do under difficult circumstances. This is not heroism, mind you. A true hero is one who can face the truth, not one who can hide it well enough. That’s cowardice.

E Pluribus unum - Indiana Jones

23 05 2008

I Saw at least 5 movies last night, in the price of one. ‘e pluribus unum’ - out of many, one. The same words that you see on a quarter dollar coin. Indiana Jones is a hodge podge of a mixture of a few movies, imagine seeing Alien, or ET, National treasure, The Mummy and The Mummy returns, all mixed into one, with Harrison Ford carrying it on his already drooping shoulders without the apparent presence of a female lead, oh wait there is a granny for the grandpa - I just don’t know her name.

Cannes critics might have given Indie, a standing ovation - they are out of their mind. Not that the film is that bad, but it definitely does not deserve a standing ovation. The effects are ok, the story is set in late 1950’s and the scenes have been completed to perfection, typical Spielberg style. What lacks is a good original story. Crystal skulls have long been subject of interest and usually a con-man’s delight. And given Spielberg’s (real life) interest in everything from Aliens to Jesus Christ’s tomb, the users expectations have been blatantly ignored. I liked most Indiana Jones’ earlier moves with the exception of the “temple of doom”, but this movie isn’t a great comeback for Lucas, Spielberg or Harrison Ford. Shia Labeouf (Transformers fame) carries his role well, there are quite a lot of similarities to the Mummy movies, especially because of the grave digging that Harrison Ford carries effortlessly. Come on, human eating insects, doesn’t that seem too familiar? Critics might argue that ‘The Mummy’ was inspired from movies like Indiana Jones (earlier ones), but the point is, graphically they were excellent, and when you come up with something that can be compared to it, do it better or don’t do it. The story is set in 1957, are you sure the technology isn’t from that year too?

With the Indiana Jones’ theme playing in the background, in every freaking second of the very few tense scenes, it almost looks comical, like you were waiting for Indiana Jones to obviously outsmart the Russians.

And the “elongated” skulls give you a deja vu feeling about an alien, you may actually come close to seeing one before the movie is over.

The climax is anything but memorable - “oh, the gold you were looking for is knowledge. Knowledge is the real gold.” Ok, it sounded lamer than I wanted it to be, but it is not an exact quote, I’m glad I forgot the exact one.

Verdict - watchable.

Google Health

19 05 2008

With the motto of storing all information at “one place” and making it accessible, google heats up the battle turf with electronic health records. For noobies, this is just like checking your personal health information online, say like checking your e-mail, similar to Microsoft Health Vault and various other available websites.

https://www.google.com/health/p/

The ease of accessibility and availability is a major plus for online health records, and obviously there will be resistance and concerns about privacy. But you do check your bank account online, right? So what about storing your health data online - similar issues. Be careful who you share your information with, your google account username and password are already your most private personal details, with mail, online shopping (checkout), youtube account, orkut account, all integrated into a single sign-on authentication, one small mistake could result in a LOT of disasters. Keep your google account password safe, avoid using them on public computers, to prevent key logggers, try using on-screen keyboard in Windows (not 100% foolproof).

And for once, Google will NOT have ads in their health section, so some concerns should be eased for now.

The story of forgiveness

15 05 2008

Dear reader,

I hope you have heard about or seen a movie called ‘Hotel Rwanda’, a movie based on the real story of a genocide of Tutsi tribe by the Hutu tribe, both belonging to Rwanda but divided by ‘Social class’ (source: wikipedia) by “Belgian and German” colonists, who were following the simple yet effective policy of ‘Divide and Rule’. Anyway, that true story is about a hero named “Paul Rusesabagina” who saved a thousand lives when people all around the world including France, Belgium, the U.S and the United nations turned their back on this country, of course it didn’t have oil, but it had gold, and even a kid knows gold is not oil. Oil is just Oil, and it comes with war.

Anyway, Corporate America stood up to help heal the wounds, and with some marvellous understanding of the problem by whoever is in power (Paul Kagame), the wounds are healing. Macy’s “peace baskets” are bringing the victims and perpetrators closer together, aided with a punishment of the perpetrators by the courts - confession to and the judgment by the tribal elders in the community. CNN reports here:

Iphigenia Mukantabana, a master weaver, sits in front of her house in Gitarama — an hour from the capital Kigali — making beautiful baskets with her friend, Epiphania Mukanyndwi.

In 1994 Mukantabana’s husband and five of her children were hacked and clubbed to death by marauding Hutu militias. Among her family’s killers was Jean-Bosco Bizimana, Mukanyndwi’s husband.

Not that the killers got away Scott free, but the government was overwhelmed with the sheer numbers.

Bizimana did spend seven years in jail. He then went before a tribal gathering, part of a return to traditional ways by the new government in 2002 with Rwanda’s justice system unable to cope and process hundreds of thousands of imprisoned perpetrators.

I would like to see some change in how we deal with communal riots, where the leaders themselves are usually involved. I don’t think they have the strength to accept a crime ever, forget a murder, they won’t even accept their practice of bigamy which I think is a far lesser crime, as long as the women involved, think it is acceptable to them by choice.

Today Rwanda is an African success story. It has one of the fastest economic growth rates in the region, and one of the lowest crime rates, and lowest rate of HIV-AIDS. About one third of Rwanda’s cabinet are female ministers and 48 percent of parliamentarians are women — the highest anywhere in the world, according to the United Nations.

The country is clean because of a mandatory policy that sees even government ministers participate in clean-up once a month. Plastic bags are banned. The international business community praises Rwanda’s good governance and the absence of official corruption or graft.

Rwanda mourned. And healed, with time. And I think it’s a powerful and compelling story about forgiveness which cannot be accepted by a majority of human beings.

Your’s truly,
Browsekid
